Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brands says it will begin vehicle production in China by 2014. The move is intended to put Infiniti on even ground with rivals like Mercedes-Benz and Audi, which already produce vehicles in China.
Infiniti has struggled to sell in any significant numbers in China, largely due to the country’s 25 percent import tax. By shifting production to China Infiniti will be able to avoid that tariff, giving the company equal footing in terms of pricing.
“For the brand to reach its aggressive sales target … local production in the world’s largest automobile market is not an option but a necessity to our success,” Andy Palmer, head of Infiniti operations, said in a statement.
Infiniti’s global sales topped 146,000 units last year, according to Reuters, with the United States accounting for the bulk of that volume. Infiniti sold just 16,126 cars in China last year, though, which was well off the 300,000 unit pace set by Audi.
