Just the Facts:

- Nissan's premium brand will assemble two luxury models with local partner Dongfeng Motor, beginning in 2014.
- The move is part of the parent company's plan to boost Infiniti's global sales to 500,000 by 2016.
- Nissan introduced the Infiniti brand in China in 2007, but sales have been slow.

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Nissan said its premium Infiniti brand will begin assembly of two luxury models in China beginning in 2014.

The Infiniti models, which haven't been identified, will be built at Nissan's joint venture with local partner Dongfeng Motor.

Nissan introduced the Infiniti brand in China in 2007, but sales have been slow. According to Reuters, Infiniti delivered just 16,126 cars to Chinese customers last year — a fraction of what market leaders Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz sold there in 2011.

"Local production in the world's largest automobile market is not an option but a necessity to our success," said Andy Palmer, Nissan executive vice president in charge of Infiniti, in a statement.

The latest move is part of the parent company's plan to boost Infiniti's global sales to 500,000 by 2016.

Inside Line says: Despite Nissan's best efforts at globalization, Infiniti remains primarily an American-centric brand.
