The all-new JX — it's not an Infiniti as we know it. It's front-drive based, and has a CVT. At least it sort of looks like one. The 'double-arch' grille is another defining aspect of Infiniti's corporate language.

All JXs come with all-wheel drive as standard in Canada. This is an American-spec JX, though. In Canada, roof rails will be standard, as will be a Class III tow-hitch receiver

Infiniti says the design language, including the distinctive D-pillar crescent, is influenced by the Essence concept car.

Although it's big enough to be considered a full-size SUV, the JX arguably looks smaller on the road.

Shapely rear window is a distinctive Infiniti styling cue now. Expect to see it on all new Infinitis.

Demonstration of BCI shows that the JX brakes itself as advertised, but if the driver doesn't then apply the brakes, the vehicle will then resume rearward motion ...

The dashboard styling and high level of finish will be familiar to Infiniti owners; note, however, the conventional foot-pedal park-brake — many competitors now use an electric switch.

The JX cockpit is user-friendly in respect to comfort, visibility and ergonomics, though the door bins are rather small.

Instrumentation clarity is hard to fault, at least on this U.S.-spec JX — possibly a metric speedometer would be more cluttered.

There are four driver-selectable drive modes for the powertrain; Eco adds throttle-pedal resistance, while in Sport the CVT mimics a stepped transmission for drivers who like to shift manually.

This rather shameful fuel-economy reading (equivalent to 17 L/100 km) was achieved by a previous driver, before we reset the computer for our own test.

There is still meaningful cargo room behind the third-row seat — 15.8 cubic feet (447 L) according to Infiniti.

There's also useful hidden storage below the cargo deck, though some of the space here is taken up by the optional Bose audio upgrade.

The $2,300 Theatre Package includes a 120V outlet. The two seven-inch screens can be used independently to play two different games or movies simultaneously.

Since there is only one powertrain at present, does the inclusion of '35' imply there may be other engine displacements in the future?
