Infiniti said a new 7-seat luxury crossover, the JX, will feature a novel driver assistance system that will help avoid collisions with people behind the vehicle.

The Japanese premium brand showed a JX concept at the August Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, Florida. A final version of the model will join the brand’s lineup in the spring of 2012.

Nissan and Infiniti’s design chief, Shiro Nakamura, called the car a “bold alternative to the many flavors of vanilla currently dominating the three-row luxury crossover segment.”

He said the model is characterized by interior flexibility and roominess, safety, and innovative interior features.

Infiniti wants to strengthen its position in the fast-growing North American market for three-row luxury crossovers. The brand, which is part of the Nissan group, is touting “class-leading roominess” and a new system that provides easier access to the third row in the Infiniti JX.

The model will come with a new driver assistance feature called Backup Collision Intervention. This technology will help a driver detect crossing objects behind his vehicle. If necessary, the system will automatically engage the brakes to help avoid a collision.

On the infotainment side, the Infiniti JX will have a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system with Waveguide bass technology and the Infiniti Connection Telematics system. That technology allows users to automatically sync their calendars and access navigation guidance to appointments.

The JX’s infotainment will also have an electronic personal concierge service that provides 24-hour access to a live team of professional assistants. That service will be offered free-of-charge with every 2012 Infiniti vehicle purchase.

The production version of the car will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show in November.

This is awesome. Since the Infiniti JX is a vehicle built for families a back-up safety feature is the smartest thing. Too much stories in the past about parents backing up their vehicles and little to their knowledge an object or even worse their child is behind the vehicle. This technology should save Infiniti owners a lot of trouble.

I think another thing too is for SUVs like this the rear view is kind of complicated because the rear window is so far away from the driver. Plus if your car is full of passengers the view might be obstructed.
