My wife and I were planning on buying a Thule or Yakima for the JX but couldn't find one in a store to look at to see how it fits. One of our members purchased the Thule Atlantis 1800 which fits well, but its out of stock in most on-line stores. This evening we found a Yakima Skybox 16S at REI in Issaquah Washington. It fits perfect and is easy to attach to the cross rails. It weighs 47 pounds and is 81" x 36" x 15", with a capacity of 16 cubic feet. We highly recommend REI. They were very knowledgable, helpful and friendly. Catch them when they have a good sale and you'll save some bucks. Or just ask if they have any specials or other discounts.

We attached it to our car at the store, which took about 15 minutes. We didn't notice any significant wind noise or loss of power during the 32 mile drive home. It has nice, easy to used padded clamps that secure the box from within the box. It has two locks and opens on both sides. We purchased the black matt finish. We saw another unit that had the shinny black finish, and it was pretty well beat up and scratched (that one was made in Mexico), the 16S is made in the USA and has a lifetime warranty. I took a couple pictures with my cell phone, so please excuse the graininess.

Its also nice that the end design of the box also matches the "D" pillar window design, and it clears the antenna and doesn't interfere with the rear hatch nor does it com past the front window. Can't wait to try it out!

Definitely next on my list to buy. Glad to see you posted what it looks like installed as I was wondering this myself. Getting tired of loosing interior space to strollers, pack and play, and every other item needed to take the family on a trip.

Some advice to folks looking at boxes. Don't cheap-out and buy a box that only opens on one side. Luckily most boxes these days open on both sides. But I can tell you from thousands of miles with a box on top of an SUV that it is WAY easier to use/load/unload when you can open from either side.

The beauty of a box is it's removable so after your trip, stick it in the garage and your JX goes back to normal. I use Gladiator (Sears) rail and hooks to hold my box vertically in the garage when it's not in use.

I purchased the Thule cargo box lift and will install it in the garage over the top of the car. It will make it easy to remove or lower it to the roof of the JX. I'll post pictures of it when its installed. Thule's instructions suck, but someone on Amazon detailed it out better. I'll post those instructions also for anyone interested. I really don't want to keep my Yakima ontop of the JX all year.

We have a 4 car garage andthe ceiling is taller and its deep enough to install the lift just behind the garage door opener. I could put it in another stahl but think it will be better right over the car.

I purchased the Yakima Skybox 21 today for the JX. I took it for a quick spin down the highway with the box empty and there was some wind noise and some lifting up in the front. The box didn't actually move where it is secured to the crossbars, though. Do you think this is to be expected with it being empty and so large?

One thing I'm curious what people think is the clamps that attach the box to the crossrails push the box itself up a little bit so it isn't actually flush with the crossrails themselves. This seems to be because the crossrails are at a strange angle. If I do try to make it so the box rests directly on the crossrails, then the box slides side to side.

Thoughts?

I have the Yakima Skybox one size down and it fits perfect. There is a slight wind noise but not really noticeable. The fuel milage wasn't really impacted much on our cross country trip, which was 8,500 miles. The box performs well and doesn't slide around either. It is a perfect fit. I purchased Thule's cargo box lift which is attached to the ceiling above the JX and makes it real easy to install and adjust properly. Its so nice to be able to suspend the box so I can get a perfect fit.

BobOB - You don't have any problems getting that out of your garage with the box strapped to your JX? Unfortunately my door opening is too short so I have to manually lug it out, then throw it on top. Your setup rocks, just wish it worked in my situation.

I'm fortunate to have tall garage doors. I don't have any problem with that at all. If your ceiling is tall enough, the lift can at least get your cargo box off the ground. Many people that have purchased it store the box up high, then lower it to the ground and then lift it to the car. Its a bit more work but does keep the box off the floor.

I went the route of getting two Gladiator hooks and simply hanging the Thule on the wall. Unfortunately I need to people to mount the box to the wall using this approach becuase the Thule "claws" fall to their lowest setting. One person to move the claws into position, and another to lift the box. A bit of a pain, but got it out of the way.

Your approach/suggested links look like a great weekend project.

Maybe one day I'll cut a Thule-sized hole in the side of my house so I can simply mount the cargo box inside my garage.
