1000 mile road trip in 61 hours

It wasn't a full 1K, but pretty close. The totals for my drive from the SF Bay area to the LA area was 400 miles each way and 150 miles around the LA area. I left as a solo driver on Friday morning around 10:30 AM and returned home on Sunday night at 11:30 PM. Here are some of my thoughts about the vehicle.

1) It's a very comfortable riding/driving car for a long road trip. I was mainly on I-5 through the central valley of California. My drive down was a total of 7 hours, with the last 2 hours in stop and go traffic in the Friday afternoon LA rush hour congestion. I felt fine and barely tired. I thought I could go at least another 2 hours driving that day.

2) The Intelligent Cruise Control worked really well. Mostly I had it set for 80-85 mph (thank you BEL radar detector) and it would slow down and speed up appropriately when I changed lanes to pass other vehicles. It even worked real well in the bumper to bumper traffic averaging 25 mph on the LA freeways.

3) The CVT is a bit sluggish from a stop, but once it got up to highway speeds it was smooth and top end acceleration was great. With the cruise going at 80-85, the CVT only had rpms at 2500, but would quickly pick up and accelerate when I wanted more speed to pass.

4) I briefly broke 100 to check it out and the car was smooth, stable, and surprisingly had little wind noise! The 20 inch wheels and tires were very quiet and smooth and transmitted little of the road irregularities into my body.

5) Lane departure warning get a bit annoying when I change lanes but do not use the turn signal because there are no cars around me.

6) Blind spot indicator works well in most situations. I don't recall any time a vehicle was in my blind spot and the indicator was not on. However, there was a short stretch when I had to drive close to a concrete barrier with no shoulder because of road construction. The indicator stayed on constantly for that mile or so, but it was working the way it should since there was a concrete barrier in my blind spot that whole time.

7) Upgraded audio system in the Deluxe touring package was very enjoyable for the whole trip, listening to mostly XM, but also a little iPhone audio via USB and Bluetooth. What I found annoying was that everytime I plugged in my iPhone to charge, it automatically went to USB audio and I had to push the XM button to get that back.

8) My kids enjoyed DVD movies on the theater system and gave rave reviews to having their own screen directly in front of them on the headrest rather than a single overhead screen like in our last car. The IR headphones worked well, as did the plugging in earphones or the Bose QC15 headphones (received from Infiniti to pre-ordering the vehicle) by cable into the jacks under the rear climate control system. Both commercial DVDs and ones I had burned myself played well. It's too bad that there was no blu-ray.

9) The rear cargo area behind the 2nd row is spacious. Two 30" rolling duffels, two 21" rolling carry-on suitcases, and 2 smaller 18 inch duffel bags all fit on the floor of the cargo area without stacking on top of each other.

10) The air-conditioned seatback with the Deluxe Touring package was awesome. That's what kept me from feeling tired after such long drives.

11) My gas mileage for the trip overall was 18.2 mpg and my average driving speed was 54 mph. Considering that I set the cruise at 80-85, I am pleased with those numbers. It used to be around 14-15 mpg for the same trip on our 2005 MDX.

12) My first experience with backup collision intervention worked well. Pulling out of parking space in a mall, a small car decided to speed up and zip past me. The brakes kicked in and stopped me. A+

Overall, a 9/10 for my rating scale! I'm looking forward to the same trip again in a few weeks!

Everything here sounds awesome. Good to hear that the JX is perfect for long trips with the family.

Where was the wind noise coming from?

And is there anything you didn't like about the JX from this trip?
Congrats and same ?s as above.
I expected a lot more wind noise, but what I did hear at very high speeds >85 mph was a little from around the side mirrors. It was much less than I had heard from our previous Acura MDX and also less than what I hear in my G35 sedan at the same speeds.

The low end acceleration was the main thing thing that was lacking, but I am used to driving my G35. The JX is my wife's daily car. I know that Infiniti wasn't striving for 0-60 performance in this vehicle, like they do in some of their other cars, so I can understand the use of CVT for improved gas mileage. Overall, I am very pleased with the CVT performance, especially at the top end when I would go from 75 up to 95 to pass another vehicle on the open freeway.

Another point that I failed to mention initially is the use of manual shifting mode in the JX. I initially thought what the point of this in a CVT with no defined gears. I realized that it proved to be useful for engine breaking on extended downslopes. On I-5 north of the LA basin is a mountainous region to ascend and descend. On my drive down there, the descent is 6% for about 10 miles or more. I was able to use the manual shift modes to maintain a good constant speed without having to use the brakes too much. It pretty much worked like engine breaking in normal automatic transmissions.

Did you purchase the JX in the bay area? If so, which dealership did you buy from and what kind of deal did they offer? thx!

The G35 has much less weight to lug around than the JX. Plus the transmission on the JX isn't designed to be very quick off the line.

I leased my JX at Infiniti of Oakland, but I would recommend going elsewhere. I would check out SF and Niello. I posted my experience in another thread. I was able to get a decent deal of $2000 off MSRP and that was 2 weeks after it came out when it was still pretty hot. You should be able to get an even better deal now if you buy off the lots.

Great post! I've had my car for 2 days and I believe I may have driven the car 48 hours straight! I experienced the same good traits that you described. I averaged 60-65 on the highway and am averaging 22.3 MPG with AWD, regular gas. I "dumped" my 2012 Acura MDX (The Acura dealer has 221 MDX's sitting on his lot rotting) and traded for the JX. .(loaded) No regrets.

Love the JX.

I know I would have over 20 MPG on the highway if my right foot was not so heavy. Even on cruise, my right thumb keeps push the ACCEL button involuntarily!
We did the same trip again this past weekend. The previous mpg was 18.2 with my driving style using premium gas, 91 octane. This time we used plus gas, 89 octane, and the mpg average was 17.5. So the drop in price and gas mileage were both about 4% and financially, it was a wash. The engine ran smoothly all along, but I did sense a small bit of low end power loss. I think that I'll stick to the premium gas in the future.
I'd do so as well. The price savings just aren't enough to warrant using lower grade gas.

I'm trying to figure out if the wind noise I'm hearing is just normal. The JX is significantly quieter than my other cars, but I do hear wind noise when driving at highway speeds. It sounds like it's coming from around the side mirrors and sounds like when a gust of wind hits my other cars on a windy day (which is when wind noise rises above all the other road noise I have in those cars). I was at the dealership for something else and they checked to make sure the roof cap rail piece wasn't loose (TSB). I didn't have time for a road test, but I will get them to check it out next time I'm there...
